Cooling concrete in hot weather: chilled water, ice, and nitrogen

Why concrete temperature matters

Hot concrete is a problem before it ever leaves the truck. As concrete temperature rises, it stiffens faster, loses slump and workability, gets harder to finish, and hydrates so quickly that it can lose long-term strength and crack. ACI 305R recommends fresh concrete not exceed 95°F at discharge, and many specs set the cap lower — 90°F or 85°F.

Concrete temperature is also one of the four inputs to evaporation rate, and the one you can actually control by ordering a cooler mix. So when conditions push you over the line, lowering the concrete temperature is a direct lever on both workability and cracking risk.

The cooling methods, weakest to strongest

Chilled batch water — about 10°F. The plant uses cooled mixing water instead of ambient. It is the cheapest and most common method, but water is only a small fraction of the mix by weight, so the cooling effect tops out around 10°F.

Ice replacing mixing water — up to about 20°F. The plant swaps part of the batch water for flaked or crushed ice. Ice cools two ways: it starts colder, and it absorbs a large amount of heat as it melts (the latent heat of fusion). This roughly doubles the drop you can get from chilled water. The catch: plants do not stockpile ice, so this needs advance notice — often 48 to 72 hours.

Liquid nitrogen injection — as much as needed. Nitrogen at around −320°F is injected directly into the mix. It can cool concrete to almost any target, which is why it is used on mass pours and in extreme heat. It is the most expensive option and requires plant capability arranged ahead of time.

Aggregate management — quiet but real. Aggregate is the biggest ingredient by weight, so its temperature dominates. Producers shade stockpiles and sprinkle them with water (evaporative cooling) to keep the coarse aggregate down. This happens at the plant before you ever call.

The part crews get wrong: lead time

Cooling is a decision you make the day before, not the morning of. Chilled water may be available same-day, but ice and nitrogen need the plant to schedule and source ahead — 48 to 72 hours is common for ice. If you wait until a 5am heat warning to ask for a cooler mix, the answer is often “too late for today.”

That is why the go / no-go on hot-weather pours really gets made the evening before: it is when you can still call the plant and get cooling on the schedule. Know your conditions a day out and the cooling decision is easy; find out at 5am and your only levers left are on-site (retarders, fogging, or rescheduling).
