When conditions dry a slab faster than bleed water can protect it, the surface is exposed — and that is when plastic shrinkage cracks form. An evaporation retarder is a liquid you spray on the fresh surface, usually right after screeding, that lays down an ultra-thin film. That film slows how fast moisture leaves the surface, buying back the protection the bleed water is not providing.
It is a temporary, finishing-stage tool. The film wears off; it does not seal or cure the concrete. Think of it as an umbrella you hold over the slab during the vulnerable window between placement and final finish.
“Retarder” means different things on a job site, and mixing them up causes real mistakes:
Evaporation retarder — a surface film that slows moisture loss during finishing (this article).
Set retarder — a chemical admixture in the mix that slows how fast the concrete stiffens, buying working time. Different product, different job — see retarder vs accelerator.
Curing compound — applied after final finishing to hold moisture in for days. Not a retarder at all, but often confused with one.
Apply after screeding, and reapply between passes. On a bad day the film needs refreshing after each finishing operation. In high wind, reapply more often.
Do not work it into the surface. An evaporation retarder is not a finishing aid. Troweling the film into the paste adds water to the surface and weakens it — the opposite of what you want. It sits on top; you finish through it, not with it.
It buys time, it does not fix bad conditions. If the evaporation rate is high enough, a retarder alone will not save the slab. Pair it with the other levers below.
Fogging raises a fine mist into the air above the slab. It increases the humidity right over the concrete and cools the surrounding air, both of which lower the evaporation rate. The critical rule: fog the air, not the surface. Spraying water directly onto fresh concrete floods the surface paste and weakens it.
Windbreaks attack the single most powerful term in the evaporation equation. Wind roughly doubles evaporation as it climbs from 5 to 15 mph, so knocking down surface air movement around the pour is one of the highest-value, lowest-cost mitigations you have.
All of these are responses to a high evaporation rate — so the decision starts with knowing your number. If conditions are mild, you may not need any of it; if they are severe, you want retarder, fogging, and windbreaks staged before the truck arrives. With low-bleed Type 1L mixes, that threshold comes sooner than it used to.
