How long before you can remove concrete forms?

The honest answer: it depends on strength, not days

Every “how many days” chart is a stand-in for the real question, which is: has the concrete gained enough strength to hold itself and its loads? The industry benchmark for stripping formwork is roughly 70% of design strength. Days are just a proxy for reaching that number — and the proxy breaks whenever the weather is not average.

So use the rules of thumb below as a starting point, and verify strength directly whenever the stakes or the conditions warrant it.

Rules of thumb by element

Vertical form sides (walls, columns, footings): 12 to 24 hours. These forms are not holding the concrete up — they are shaping it. Once the concrete is firm enough not to slump or tear, the sides can come off.

Slab and deck forms (supported): 3 to 4 days. Now the form is carrying weight, so the concrete has to be able to carry it instead.

Beam and girder soffits: 7 to 14 days. The most heavily loaded members wait the longest.

Reshores and props: often stay in place beyond initial stripping to redistribute loads while the structure gains full strength. Follow the engineer's reshoring plan.

These follow the general logic of ACI 347 (formwork): the more load a form carries and the more critical the member, the longer it stays.

Why temperature moves every number

Concrete gains strength through hydration, and hydration is temperature-driven. Warm concrete gains strength fast; cold concrete gains it slowly, and below about 40°F it nearly stops (see ACI 306). That means the same slab that hits strip strength in 3 days at 70°F might need a week or more during a cold snap.

This is the trap: crews strip on the calendar, the calendar was built for warm weather, and the winter pour has not gotten there yet. Stripping it anyway is how you get deflection and cracking that shows up weeks later.

What happens if you strip too early

On non-structural sides, too-early stripping tears the surface — the form pulls away green paste, leaving a rough, spalled face. On supported members, it is worse: the concrete deflects under its own weight, cracks, and in load-bearing beams and elevated slabs, it can fail. The strength you lose by loading concrete before it is ready does not come back.

The reliable way to know: verify strength

Instead of guessing from the calendar, verify. The maturity method estimates in-place strength from the concrete's own temperature history — no waiting on the lab, and it accounts for exactly the temperature effects that throw off the day-count. Field-cured cylinders broken at the strip date are the traditional alternative.
