Concrete shrinks as it dries, and shrinkage creates tension. That tension has to go somewhere — and if you do nothing, it relieves itself as a random crack wandering across your slab. Control joints (also called contraction joints) are pre-planned lines of weakness that force that crack to form where you want it: straight, hidden at the bottom of a saw kerf, and easy to seal.
Saw cutting does not stop concrete from cracking. Nothing does. It decides where the crack goes. And the single biggest factor in whether that works is timing.
For conventional wet-cutting, the window is roughly 4 to 12 hours after finishing. You are threading a needle between two failure modes:
Too early: the paste has not bonded to the aggregate yet. The blade tears chunks loose instead of slicing cleanly, leaving ragged, raveled joint edges. The slab is not strong enough to hold the cut.
Too late: the concrete has already shrunk enough to relieve its own stress — by cracking on its own, in a random line. Once that happens, your control joint is decorative. The crack you were trying to prevent has already formed somewhere you did not choose.
The window is real but narrow, and it moves. That is the part most timing charts get wrong: they give you a fixed number of hours, when the honest answer depends entirely on conditions.
The saw-cut clock is really a strength-gain clock, and strength gain is driven by temperature and moisture loss — the same conditions that drive evaporation rate.
Hot weather advances and narrows the window. A slab poured on a hot, dry, windy morning can set fast enough to cut within 4 hours — and it can crack on its own not long after. On the worst days, the window is short and it comes early. If you wait for your normal end-of-day cut, you have missed it.
Cold weather delays and widens the window. A cool day slows hydration, pushing the earliest safe cut out to 10, 12, or more hours — but it also buys you a longer window before random cracking becomes a risk.
This is why crews that cut “at the same time every day” get random cracks in the summer. The pour that behaved yesterday behaves differently today because the weather changed. Knowing your hot-weather conditions in advance tells you whether today is a cut-early day.
Early-entry (“green”) saws are designed to cut soon after finishing — typically 1 to 4 hours — using a shallow, skid-plate-guided blade. They let you cut before the concrete is strong enough for a conventional saw, which is a real advantage on hot days when the window comes early. The cut is shallower, so joint spacing and depth rules still apply.
Conventional wet-cutting waits for the concrete to reach enough strength that a water-cooled diamond blade cuts clean — the 4-to-12-hour window above. It cuts deeper and is the standard for most flatwork.
Depth: cut control joints one-quarter to one-third of the slab thickness. On a 4-inch slab that is about 1 inch deep. Too shallow and the joint does not create enough weakness to control the crack; the concrete cracks somewhere else.
Spacing: in feet, space joints at roughly 24 to 36 times the slab thickness in inches. A 4-inch slab gets joints every 8 to 12 feet; a 6-inch slab every 12 to 18 feet. Keep panels as close to square as you can — long, narrow panels crack across the middle no matter how well you time the cut.
The field test is simple: you should be able to walk on the slab and run a blade without the aggregate raveling out. But “walk on it” happens at very different clock times depending on the weather — which is the whole problem.
